VOLVER. Absolutely wonderful. It is very much in the vein of TODO SOBRE MI MADRE- about women & the way they can be so set apart or the way they can completely come through for each other. Almodóvar knows about the ladies- according to Lily, "it's almost scary how much he understands women." Penelope Cruz is jawdroppingly good and definitely deserved the Best Actress award she picked up at Cannes. I've never found her more compelling. I felt that surprise you get when you see someone doing something you never thought they had in them- like Heath Ledger in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Carmen Maura is absolutely amazing- and I was really happy to see one of my favorite Almodóvar players, Chus Lampreave, as Aunt Paula. She's 76 years old and still steals every scene that she's in.
What can I say, there's something about going to see a movie and actually feeling excitement when it begins. I definitely felt that way when the opening credits ran tonight. It's a sense of joy that occurs all too rarely, but I can now add Almodóvar to the list of artists who truly make me thrilled about seeing a movie.
